Character History: Katie Holt's life changed the day her father and brother were lost on a mission to Pluto's moon Kerberos. The official report said pilot error, but she didn't believe it, and she was determined to find the truth and get her family back. After being discovered hacking into the Galaxy Garrison computers repeatedly, she was banned from the property. She wouldn't let a little thing like that stop her, so she disguised herself as a boy and enlisted as a Galaxy Garrison cadet under the name "Pidge Gunderson". Considering there are plenty of girls in the Galaxy Garrison, the disguise is mostly necessary to conceal her identity further. She ended up assigned to a team with two other cadets: Lance and Hunk. As far as teams went they were… pretty terrible, honestly. Lance was mostly interested in trying to be cool, Hunk was mostly interested in keeping the contents of his stomach inside his stomach, and Pidge was mostly interested in finding her family. Also, she was hiding her entire identity from her team.
In her downtime, she developed tech she could use to scan for interstellar chatter. It was with this machinery that she picked up alien chatter from the Galra empire and learned that they were looking for a weapon called Voltron. After a failed simulation, Lance and Hunk followed her up to the roof and she told them about what she'd heard, but before they could process it, a ship crash landed right nearby. A ship that was definitely not from Earth. Lance, Hunk, and Pidge ran to investigate. Stealthily, because of course the Galaxy Garrison people were already there. Pidge hacked into the feed from a camera they'd set up and saw that the person in the ship was Shiro, pilot of the Kerberos mission, but there was no sign of the rest of the crew. They decided they needed to find a way to break him out of Galaxy Patrol custody, but before they had a chance, Keith, Lance's old rival, showed up to do the same thing. They rushed after him and the four of them took Shiro away to Keith's hideout. Keith told them about the weird energy readings he'd been investigating. Combining his research with Pidge's research, and using a machine Hunk developed, they followed the readings to a cave with drawings of a blue lion. When Lance touched a drawing, it activated and sent them into the cave where the Blue Lion waited. They went into the cockpit and Lance started flying it. The Galra attacked, trying to capture the lion, but they escaped into a wormhole and found themselves at the Castle of Lions.
Princess Allura and her advisor, Coran, awoke from stasis and filled the team in on what Voltron was, along with the locations of the other lions. She revealed who was to fly which lion. Pidge was to fly the Green Lion, which has an inquisitive nature and needed a pilot of intellect and daring. She and Shiro went to find the green lion on a peaceful jungle planet. She grew anxious and started rambling, but Shiro comforted her and told her a quote that Sam Holt, his commander and Pidge's father, though Shiro didn't know that at the time, always said, that if you get too worried about what could go wrong, you might miss the chance to do something great. The words helped, probably in part because they came from Pidge's father, and she claimed her lion and they returned to join the others.
The Red Lion was locked away on a Galra ship, and that ship was heading straight towards them. They made a plan to retrieve it: Hunk and Lance would provide a distraction with the two lions the Galra Empire already knew they had, while PIdge, Keith, and Shiro snuck aboard in the Green Lion. Shiro realized that he had been on this ship before when he was held prisoner. Pidge was supposed to guard their exit, but as soon as she heard Shiro had been held prisoner here, she demanded they go find the prisoners, accusing Shiro of not caring when he said they didn't have time. Finally, she told him that Commander Holt is her father, and he agreed to help her find the prisoners. This is probably the point where he figured out that Pidge wasn't a boy, though he didn't say anything at the time. Sam and Matt Holt had almost certainly mentioned Katie, and said nothing about a second son.
Pidge and Shiro made their way to the prisoner bay, but were stopped when they came across a drone. Pidge zapped it, then reprogrammed it on the spot to work for them. She named it Rover. Her family was not among the prisoners being held, but they helped them get to the escape pods anyway. Keith retrieved his lion, and with the Red, Yellow, Blue, and Green Lions all claimed, they could unlock the Black Lion. The five of them flew out to fight the Galra warship together. It was a struggle, since they didn't actually know how to combine and form Voltron, but in the face of grave danger, they manage it, and the five of them fought off the ship. Shiro promised Pidge that they wouldn't stop looking til they found her father.
The group was not immediately good together. Though they had formed Voltron once, they weren't sure how and couldn't figure out how to repeat the experience. The secrets Pidge was keeping made it hard for her to connect mentally with the team, since she didn't want them to find out. Allura pushed them hard, yelling at them whenever they so much as took a break, until finally chaining them all together to eat so that they'd be forced to feed each other. This led to Pidge snapping at Allura and pointing out that she wasn't their princess, at which point Allura threw food at her. The team banded together to fight back, throwing food at Allura and Coran all while chained together. This led to them bonding and finally being able to form Voltron.
The prisoners woke up after having been in stasis for a while and Pidge immediately asked about her family. They didn't know where her family was now, but they said that they'd been made to fight and Shiro had been so bloodthirsty that he'd injured Pidge's brother in his thirst for blood, earning himself the nickname Champion. Pidge was, of course, not happy to hear that, and Shiro had no memory of the event. They went to the downed Galra ship and used Shiro's enhanced Galra prosthetic to interface with the equipment. Pidge started the download, but before she could get very far, another ship came crashing down right towards them. She didn't want to leave, but Shiro grabbed her and flew her away before the ship could hit them. It destroyed the downed ship and any hopes of finding a record of Pidge's family, but they survived. They teamed up with the other paladins to fight the gladiator that came from the ship, and the fight lodged Shiro's memory. He told Pidge that he'd hurt Matt to protect him, and only acted bloodthirsty so that they'd put him in the ring instead of Matt. Pidge forgave him and hugged him, and Shiro revealed that he knew she was Katie Holt, but promised not to tell her secret.
Pidge found enough information in the data she'd downloaded to have an idea of where to start looking for her family, so she decided to leave the team. People were pretty upset about the idea, though Shiro defended her, saying that a team couldn't be forced, though he also wanted her to stay. Before she had a chance to decide, a bomb, sent in disguised as Pidge's robot Rover, blew up the crystal that powered the castle. At the same time there were reports of an attack on the local village. The team split up: Hunk and Coran left in the pod Pidge had readied to find a new crystal, Allura and Keith go to defend the castle, and Shiro stays with an injured Lance. Pidge explains the modifications she's made to the pod: cloaking reverse engineered from invisible technology in the castle and a booster that could either make the pod go much, much faster or just turn it into a bomb. While she's explaining, Galra soldiers invade the castle. The attack on the village had been a ruse to thin their defenses. The soldiers take down Shiro and capture him and the still unconscious Lance while they prepare the Castle (which is also a spaceship) for launch. They put up a shield, locking Keith and Allura out, leaving Pidge as the only Paladin free to move about the castle. Allura gives her instructions and she sabotages their attempts to take off, but they aren't in the clear yet. The Galra soldiers try and capture her, but she evades them mostly by using speed and her wits. She's small and easy to underestimate, but very capable. She realizes as she does this that she hasn't always been the best teammate and vows to change that. Rover sacrifices itself to help save Pidge, but Sendak blackmails her, threatening to hurt Shiro and Lance if she doesn't turn herself in. Right before she has to face him alone, Shiro and Allura finally make it in and they defeat Sendak together. Pidge decides to stay with her team after all and defend the galaxy, and since she wants there to be no secrets between them, she also reveals her gender. It turns out everyone except Lance had already figured it out. Coran didn't even realize they were supposed to think she was male.
After a detour where Pidge got to play with a robot and Lance got conned out of his lion temporarily, they reached the Balmera. The Balmera is a planet-sized creature that produced the crystals that powered the castle. It had been taken over by the Galra Empire which had enslaved its people and mined the creature for its crystals, heedless of how they were hurting it. Pidge made use of her cloaking device, which she'd also added to her Lion, and used it to stealthily drop sensors in the mine. After a hard battle, they freed the Balmera and restored life to the dying creature.
To figure out their next step, Coran tried to retrieve Sendak's memories while he was kept in stasis in the ship. Meanwhile, Pidge worked on reverse engineering Galran tech using the crystal they had tried to use to steal the ship. Unfortunately, the crystal had left some corruption which became clear when the castle tried to kill them. The food dispensers attacked Pidge and Hunk, and after they managed to defeat it, the gravity shut off, leaving them floating in the lab. Finally, the team managed to get the castle back to normal, and Pidge routed through Sendak's memories until she came to a promising location to check out: a hidden transport hub that might contain more information. Pidge infiltrated the hub's computers, but found nothing useful, so Shiro and Allura boarded one of the ships to try and get more information, with Pidge guiding the hacking remotely. She also used her hacking skills to get information from one of the robot guards used by the Galra. Unfortunately, in the process of getting the information, Allura was captured.
To get her back, the team traveled to Emperor Zarkon's central command. Before they could get very far, something caused Voltron to fall apart, leaving everyone in their own individual lions. They managed to retrieve Allura, and despite a disastrous altercation between Keith and Emperor Zarkon, they all escaped into a wormhole. However, the druid Haggar zaps the portal as they go into it, leaving it unstable, and sending the lions hurtling into parts unknown, separated from each other and the castle and leaving us on a cliffhanger that will kill me til season 2 comes out.
Abilities/Special Powers: Pidge is a Paladin of Voltron and pilots the Green Lion that turns into Voltron's arm. She's also a wiz with all things technical. She's an expert hacker and capable of playing around with new tech and reverse engineering it so she can apply it to her own projects. She's also fast and agile and very clever. Her bayard takes the form of an electrified green arrow shaped blade that can shoot out to act as either a weapon or a grappling hook. Her uniform has a lot of special features, such as a jetpack, some sort of oxygen apparatus, communication devices in the helmet, and a holographic computer interface on the wrist. She's used this to make an illusion of herself to distract enemies before.
Third-Person Sample: Pidge hits the ground and rolls with impact, using the jetpacks in her suit to slow her descent. She rolls, landing on her back, and stares through the visor of her helmet up at an unfamiliar blue sky. For a moment, she's too dazed to process anything. What? Where is she? How? Is this Earth? It looks like it could be Earth, but that would be so much of a coincidence that she can't believe it's true. Besides, she doesn't think Zarkon's witch would have corrupted the portal in a way that was actually helpful. Sure, Pidge wasn't going home without her family, but she knew some of the others sometimes got homesick.
The others. She sits up, looking wildly around. "Guys? Come in?" She taps her helmet. She's not getting anything. And she can't see anyone either and--
Her lion. She was in the Green Lion and now it isn't here. She stands up hurriedly. "Shiro? Hunk? Allura? Anyone? Hello?" She turns around until her eyes finally rest on an unfamiliar mansion and her shoulders slump. No lions, and no teammates. She's alone on a strange planet and further away from achieving her goals than ever before. The situation seems pretty impossible.
Good thing she's used to pretty impossible. She squares her shoulders, puts her helmet back on, and starts making her way towards the mansion. If there are answers to be found, they're going to be in there.
First-Person Sample: Hello? [The feed flickers, and Pidge appears in full Voltron uniform. It didn't take her long to patch into the local network--she'd been provided with a phone, but considering how low tech it is compared to the transmitters in her suit, she'd simply added a relay to forward everything there and made the call from her wrist.
Once she's satisfied the the feed is working, she nods, satisfied, and tugs off her helmet.]
Hello. My name is Pidge. I'm… well, I'm a Paladin of Voltron, but from what I've come to understand through reading the archived posts in this network, you all may not have heard of that. [At least that means the Galra Empire doesn't control this… planet? She isn't even sure if that's the right word.]
I've managed to obtain the answers to all my basic questions, and while I'm sure more will come up, for now I only have one pressing question.
[She throws her hand up, the one not transmitting the video, frustration creeping across her face.] Why are there no access panels anywhere? What's powering this mansion? I want to see how it works but I can't do that if it won't let me in!
[She exhales, clears her throat, and gives another nod.]
...that's it. Thanks.
